Accepting and Refusing
Now it’s easy to talk to friends from all over the world using computer-to-computer telephoning. And it’s free!
You will need three things:
An Internet connection. We recommend broadband or DSL rather than Dial-up. The connection is better.
A headset or microphone and speakers that hook up to your computer.
Connection to an Internet telephoning service.
Here’s how you sign up for the free Internet telephoning service:
Go to www.skype.com.
Click on the top button that says
The instructions are also available in six languages (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, German, French, Spanish).
Just click on the flags to the right of the banner to see instructions in those languages.
Follow the Skype instructions carefully in order to download the free online telephone service.
You will need to choose a “Skype Name.” Your Skype name is important because it allows people to call you when you are online, and this is how we will contact you in the Telephone English program.
After you have successfully downloaded Skype, you will see an icon (a small green or red diamond shape) on your computer. Whenever you want to use skype.com, click on that icon.
Make sure you have your headset (or microphone and speakers) hooked up, and you can call your friends, as long as they are also online, for free.
